take you to santa rosa. arson investigators are hard at work. the first fire started just before 10:00 last night at st. rose church on 10th street. minutes later fire crews were called to church of incarnation and then a third call came in about a fire at an engineering company on third street called carlie macy engineering. all fires were quickly put out and damage is minimal. investigators believe the fires are connected. right now there's no evidence the fires are hate crimes but at this point nothing is being ruled out. so far obviously no arrests have been made. >>> it is october first and blazing hot outside. a fall heat wave continues to grip the bay area. let's bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri in the nbc bay area weather center. super hot today. >> feeling more like july here across a lot of the bay area. good enough for a record in santa rosa. 103 in gilroy. walnut creek, 102. san francisco, 92 degrees. sweltering for city standards. upper 80s in the south bay. let's take you to that live hd sky camera network right now. a bit hazy. the winds are trying to tur

drop in our temperatures. 55 in santa rosa. from 100 in santa cruz, down to 60 in the morning hours. 66 in san jose. maybe a light jacket to start. through the afternoon on wednesday, we're not going to cool off too much again. just slight cooling coming our way. 92 in sunnyvale. 88 in san jose. 90 in morgan hill. and for the east bay, we'll find widespread heat. 79 in alameda. 74 in san francisco. and 72 in pacifica. on your three-day forecast, here we go. numbers going down by thursday and friday into the low 80s. for the upcoming weekend, we're going to put 70s back on the board for saturday and sunday. take a look at was head into monday and tuesday of next week. we have this chance of showers. right now, the gfs, global forecasting model, is showing a better chance of some showers possibly by next tuesday. maybe able to put a rain icon by next tuesday. cooler weather by this weekend. >> quite the spread, 93 to 76. >> it is. >>> coming up, the important recall for a popular grocery chain. this is a lot of food for 4 bucks. yeah... think they made a mistake? i don't know - maybe. the

. speaking of the cool, it's happening right now. anywhere from 59 in santa rosa to low 60s in the bay area. this time last night, 80s in the bay area. now the natural ocean ac filtering in. 62 in danville. winds from 5 to 10 miles per hour. that's starting to push in some of this fog that we saw earlier today. let's get a look outside of our live hd sky camera. not too much in the way of fog from san bruno toward the bay bridge. however, visibility is getting reduced. in san francisco, a little bit of cloud cover pass by the lens. and there it is right now. pushing right across the golden gate bridge. so that's going to dramatically change our picture for tomorrow morning. all right. back on the weather boards, what we'll find over the next 48 to 72 hours is this system we've been tracking for the past couple of days. it's pretty slow to move. no rainfall the next two to three days. it's all about the cooling breeze returning, pushing all that hot air we had well off to he north. primarily this will push at the coastline. instead of 70s, 80s and 90s. we'll go with 50s and 60s for thursday'

is chilly out there. low 50s already in santa rosa. mid-40s by tomorrow morning. 59 san jose. 58 in san francisco. and a little bit of a sea breeze still out there around fairfield. the on shore winds picked up today. you may have noticed the plu angels. we had blow clouds west of the golden gate. that was a staple of the afternoon along with cooler temperatures. san francisco a high of 60 degrees. tonight we will see patches of low clouds returning. maybe mist in a few spots tomorrow morning along the does. our afternoon tomorrow a is cooler as more clouds spill in. here the change. not only cooler temperatures but maybe a chance of seeing a few showers especially in the south bay and the santa cruz mountains. the satellite-radar view shows the same area of low pressure off shore waited if the weekend to finish. it will bring in a chance of showers midweek and thursday and friday it shifts in to southern california and showers moving with it well to the south of santa cruz by the end of the week tomorrow, partly cloudy skies. not a lot in the way of showers except up to lake county

north of santa rosa may see an isolated shower on tuesday. the best bet for showers, especially for the north bay. that will come in at times for wednesday. here in our three-day forecast, the temperature not changing a whole lot. wednesday does seem to be the best bet for showers. wednesday, a bit of a break. one more to deal with as we get toward friday evening. especially for the north bay. that will weaken as it slides south. by saturday morning, the skies should begin to clear. we'll see the temperatures climbing into the mid 80s. sunday into monday, and of course, with the a's in town hosting the games in oakland, it looks like partly cloudy skies. no showers around oakland for tomorrow, wednesday, most of that should be in the south bay. we'll keep our fingers crossed on wednesday. game, plural. >> we're going with games. >> jessica is crossing our fingers. >> back in a moment. >>> okay, all you germophones, beware. we may want to put down that hand sanitizer. some some experts believe it is possible to be too clean. the dirty little seek that most germs are harmless and many are

another new record in santa rosa, reaching 101. shattering that old number of 87 set back in 2001. and to put all this in a perspective, you know when it gets hot inland, it's not always hot at the coastline. in san francisco we did just that for the day. reaching 94 degrees. getting close to that record of 96. but here is the thing. as we look ahead to our forecast, by thursday, temperatures expected to drop down into 60s. so not too much longer expected of this at the coastline. upper 90s and low 100 for the east bay. it is a scorcher as we have been saying. take plenty of breaks out here tonight, even if you're knowing the night is going to be falling, these numbers are going to be dangerously hot. let's take you outside of the live hd sky camera. not working in san jose. we have the haze with us in about 48 hours. we'll gradually get some cloud cover moving in. and in san francisco, we do have plenty of wild action happening this week. look at this cruise ship right now across the bay. that's a gorgeous shot. america's cup, fleet week, and plenty of a's and giants action as we head th

mailman, has been dropping letters into them for years. rosa started noticing something strange a couple of months ago. >> i think somebody tried to get the mail from the box. and it's a headache because we have to go like maybe every two days to the post office and get our mail. every day. >> reporter: neighbors say they came to the front panel and didn't think there was a problem. but when they stepped to the back side of the mailboxes, they knew they were in trouble. we discovered three different community mailboxes that had been vandalized. that means at least 36 residents have to make that trip to the post office to get their mail. this man says he needs this resolved quickly. he hasn't received his pg&e bill and worries about late fees. we spoke with the property manager who says she doesn't know who's responsible to replace the mailboxes. the owners, the renters, or the post office. the post office did not return our calls today. now rosa says she worries about identity fraud. >> yes. of course i worry about it. >> reporter: in san jose, damian trujillo, nbc bay area news.
